"Wonder of wonders, this native New Yorker's debut CD sounds legitimately
more jazzy than folky--smack-dab in the Laura Nyro/Ricki Lee Jones/Sophie B. Hawkins lineage,
complete with sax solos warm enough for Baker Street and titles that namecheck
Ab Fab and Dorothy. The latter of which "contains language which may not be appropriate for radio" to wit: "No one gives a fuck about the wizard in the end." Tell Auntie Em and Toto, too; Oz never did give nothin' to the tin man that he didn't already have." Chuck Eddy, The Village Voice "Allison Tartalia [is] a singer with a sultry voice. . ." Marc Santora, New York Times | "Tartalia is to pop music what granola is to cereal. That is to say, she is complex, loaded with surprises and textures, and more than filling. I could go on, but I think you get the point....And if her band were any tighter, they wouldn't be able to breathe.... No matter how you slice it, a sparkling debut." “…a standout among female “confessional” singer/songwriters” Dale Johnson, Cincinnati CityBeat
". . . a bit edgy, often very fun, sometimes serious and beautiful and. . .stunningly good piano work. . . " Susanne Millsaps, KRCL, Salt Lake City "Fresh, upbeat and lively, she follows through with great power, talent and a truly wild set." Rick Siegel, onlinetv.com "Allison Tartalia brings us her own blend of indy pop that veers into jazz, folk, rock and funk, delighting at every turn with her edgy lyrics that capture and intrigue, and make you smile. Who can resist an album that serves up a song inspired by the British TV show "Absolutely Fabulous" and another called "Dorothy's Reply," a sassy retort from Oz that makes you hit replay to relish it again. The CD is called 'Ready,' and I certainly am, for more." JD Doyle, KPFT Houston; Co-Producer, AudioFile on "This Way Out"
"Tartalia rolled through the alternating set with a number of gorgeous and delicately-executed piano ballads from her new CD, Ready." Brian Baker, Cincinnati CityBeat "South X Midwest: Greater Cincinnati's South By Southwest 'Class of 2006' shines bright deep in the heart of Texas" (March 2006)
"The label "singer-songwriter" doesn't fully grasp Allison Tartalia's worldly sound. It's not just guitars and emotional lyrics here. You'll hear a full range of eclectic noise during Tartalia's set at Chicks Rockfest this weekend - jazzy piano, rich percussion and clever lyrics delivered in the singer's commanding voice. Singer-songwriters are always more interesting when they add something extra - and Tartalia's got plenty of extras in her diverse sound." Kari Wethington, CinWeekly (April 2006)
"Allison Tartalia is an inferno of restlessly inspired energy that has been waiting to explode onto a CD of her own for a long time. Her time is here and now." Jade Esteban Estrada, Raggedblade.com "...a delightful fusion of jazzy instrumentation and remarkable vocals...." Laura Turner Lynch, Kweevak.com "While this is Allison's debut it plays more like a record from a seasoned studio professional. Allison's career is off to a great start." Dennis Halsey, BestFemaleMusicians.com "Allison Tartalia's first CD is a very accomplished blend of styles. Pop, jazz and folk all get a look in. Vocally she might remind you of Ani DiFranco." "Her vocal delivery has a slightly rough, and somewhat sexy edge to it...the production value of this recording is of excellent standard…I have always felt that this style of music needs to be seen and heard live to be fully appreciated...If you're in the New York area, I recommend checking her out." Steve Paro, godsofmusic.com "Pristine, piano-driven fare with Tartalia's busy, DiFranco inspired phrasing, and empowerment lyrics." listen.com Voted #1 on the Alternative and Acoustic/Folk charts at soundclick.com |
